Solar Powered Windows

An update on the research in "solar powered windows": http://www.greentechgazette.com/index.php/solar-energy/solar-windows-breakthrough-from-mit-looms-large/

This solar window uses invisible dyes to concentrate sunlight and redirect it towards the PV cells, which have been integrated into the frames. Not only will this solar window make it easier for homeowners to install photovoltaic technology, without worrying about messing up their roofs and falling down ladders but the MIT solar windows are also supposed to frugal as well costing less that $1 per watt to build.

According to MIT, the cost reduction is due to the organic solar concentrators, which are the dyes that absorb different wavelengths of light and push this energy towards the frame, which contains far fewer PV cells than standard solar panels, yet producrd the same energy output.

So, imagine three years off when these solar windows are expected to hit the market, homeowners everywhere are replacing the standard glass windows in their home with solar windows. Some would say that replacing their windows may be a major pain (or pane), but the gain from the solar windows is extra energy, lower electricity bills and a house that is green to go for many years to come. For those who don’t do windows, you may rethink this one when it comes to solar windows.

Inflatable Solar Panel

Source: Greentech.co.uk – July 09, 2008

A UK-based sustainable product design consultancy, has unveiled an inflatable solar collector (called ‘SolarStore’). This reportedly harnesses the sun’s natural energy to warm domestic water and “can heat up to three full tanks of water per day at temperatures close to 80°C.” and thus could provide a cheap source of domestic hot water. The designers anticipate that the product could be beneficial in developing countries, particularly those in which reliable electricity supply is a problem. It works by allowing sunlight to pass through a clear outer layer to a black inner layer which holds the water. By a process of heat transfer, the water is then heated up. The surrounding air between the clear and black layers then acts as insulation to help keep the heat in...

Asphalt as a Solar Energy Collector

From: EnergyRefuge.com – August 22, 2008

Researchers at Worchester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) are reported to be close to commercializing a means of using the energy-absorbing properties of asphalt as an alternative energy source.

These researchers are developing a solar collector that could potentially turn sun-heated roads and parking lots into ever-present (and inexpensive) sources of electricity and hot water. So far these tests have taken slabs of asphalt imbedded with thermocouples, which measure heat penetration, and copper pipes to gauge how well that heat could be transferred to say flowing water for example. By pumping water through copper piping embedded in the hot asphalt the water would, of course, absorb the heat in the process. This hot water could then be used without modification for heating buildings or in industrial processes or could be passed through a thermoelectric generator to produce electricity.

Solar Illuminations (a ‘green’ corporation who has its headquarters in Florida) are likely to be offering solar powered glass panels in 2010. Basically they will look no different than a regular piece of glass and can be tinted various shades too. From inside and outside the building it looks like regular glass. However, the great feature is that the glass is actually a solar panel and will therefore create electricity. Imagine a tall building, fitted with hundreds of solar glass panels.

10 solar panels florida on Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:25 pm

There is a huge variety of solar panel systems available. Some can cost tens of thousands of dollars, and some cost just a couple hundred. This means anyone can get into solar, there's an entry point for just about everybody.
